There are two kinds of people in the world: those who like to have a lot of pillows in bed, and those who don’t like any pillows at all. You may be interested to know that not all pillows are “fluff”. Of course, decorative pillows are the easiest way to elevate your bedroom from practical to stylish, and considering that you spend more than 3,000 hours a year in your bedroom, it’s important to take care of your surroundings. But some decorative pillows are actually versatile and not only enhance the look and style of the bed, but also have a practical purpose.
So how many pillows do you need in a bed? And how to arrange it? Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed; Let’s break it down pillow-by-pillow by pillow.
Let’s start with the basics: your sleep pillow. Regardless of your décor style, the one pillow that is essential to every bed is the pillow. Most people have at least two in bed, and if you’re a couple, maybe four.
Pillows usually come in three sizes:
In addition to pillowcases, we also highly recommend pillow protectors for your sleep pillows. Not only do they protect against dust mites, but they also extend the life of your pillows. Pillows are often stained with natural body oils, not to mention residual makeup and saliva (yes, this happens to our best people), so a good protector is a must.
Pro tip: Just because these pillows are meant to be used for sleeping, they don’t have to be boring. You can bring everything to life with colorful edges or extravagant embroidery details.
Ever wondered why beds in home décor magazines always look so magical? The answer: the European pillow. They are so called because the large (26 x 26 inches) square originated in Europe and was used as a sleeping pillow.
Euro is the ultimate combination of function and style. In fact, it can provide back support when you’re sitting in bed reading (or watching Netflix). It also protects your headboard, creating a barrier between it and the natural oils of your face and body. If you don’t have a headboard, a European pillow is the perfect alternative.
From a design standpoint, their large size helps to create a sense of height for your bed, drawing eyes up and around the room. They can also completely cover crumple, sleepy pillowcases.
We recommend using one European pillow in a single bed, two European pillows in a double or queen bed, and three European pillows in a king-size bed. European-style pillows are covered with pillowcases instead of pillowcases. A pillowcase is an open sleeve that you use while sleeping, while a pillowcase covers a decorative pillow. They usually have flanges or nice details, and we don’t recommend sleeping on them.
There are also decorative pillows in other sizes, the same as the pillows: standard, large and extra-large. For those who don’t like large square euros, a set of decorative pillows is a good option. These are usually covered with pillowcases to match or coordinate with your duvet cover or comforter. Not only do these pillows enhance the aesthetics of the bed, but they are also very practical because they provide great support when sitting up.
While all of the pillows mentioned so far have a practical purpose, the signature pillows are all fun and full of personality. Think of them as jewels in your bed. If your bed is as androgynous and timeless as a little black dress, the signature pillow can be a statement necklace or stylish earrings that you can change as you like.
It is advisable to change the signature pillow as the seasons change, experimenting with different textures, patterns, colors, and sizes. The options are endless: bold colors, faux furs, monograms or treasures from exotic travels.
Now that you know the type of pillow that’s right for you, you can start decorating your bed with them. Here are some tips to help you decide on the style of your pillow:
Classic-style beds usually come with the largest number of decorative pillows. If you prefer a more romantic look, you can add pretty much as you want the right stuff.
For something more bespoke and neutral, we like to keep it symmetrical: the pillow is hidden behind a set of decorative pillows (standard, large, extra-large or European) with two smaller squares (20 x 20 inches) or 18 x 18 inches in front or one lumbar vertebrae centered in front.
If you like a sleek, modern, super sophisticated hotel look without any fuss, then this is a great choice.
Instead of propping pillows up, lay them flat and stacked on top of each other – the sleeping pillow is at the bottom and two decorative pillows of the same size are at the top. Although you can always add a simple waist in the middle, it doesn’t take much else to complete the look.
There’s a trend these days towards a more bohemian Californian style. I see it almost anywhere I look for design inspiration.
The way to do it is simple: simply stack pillows of different shapes, sizes, patterns, textures and colors to create a playful look. It’s fun and lighthearted, and it shows that you’re not taking yourself too seriously.
Last but not least, the question I get most often is, “Where do I put my pillow when I sleep?” ”
My answer? When you throw them, no matter where they land. Whether it’s a bench, chair, or floor, don’t worry. After all, they’re just pillows.
